Stephen, Matt & Scott in their GB Track-Suits |
Local Club on the up
World Class
Three members of Brentwood Trampoline Club recently represented Great Britain at the World Age Group Championships. Running immediately after the (senior) World Championships every two years this competition has 4 age groups, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 & 17-18 and this year attracted some 1,300 athletes from 35 countries to Quebec. Brentwood's representatives, Stephen Page, Scott Gregory and Matthew Wright were in the men's 13-14, 15-16 & 17-18 age competitions respectively.
In the first day of competition Matthew Wright, now a relatively experienced international, was delighted just to reach the finals. Starting in reverse order from the preliminaries, he was second to compete in the final when he performed a true world class routine scoring 22.2+14.6 (36.8). After a nail-biting wait as the remaining four finalists competed, Matthew was delighted to take the silver medal overall!
The following day saw Stephen Page & Scott Gregory competing, Stephen in his first ever International representing GB. Despite his nerves Stephen performed to the best of his ability scoring 21.5+9.2 (30.7) to end in 33rd place of over 50 and only 4.2 points short of a final place in what was probably the strongest age group of the competition. Scott also didn't make the final but was agonisingly close scoring 22.0+13.2 (35.2) and looking to make the final until just the last few competitors bounced. Unfortunately these last few saw some very strong performances so Scot ended end in 11th place of 70 and just 0.3 shy of a final place with just 0.3 points separating 6th to 11th places. Matthew & Scott were also the highest scoring GB competitors giving them good claim to the GB number 1 spot in their age groups.
Paul Kitchen, Brentwood's Head Coach who accompanied the squad to Canada for the event, commented 'these boys not only competed well but represented GB & Brentwood well, and were highly respected as a consequence'.
Essex Sports Award Certificate |
Leading in Essex
On the same day that Matthew won his silver other members of the club were closer to home at the Essex Sports Awards 2007 ceremony; the Essex Sports Awards, hosted by sportessex, celebrate and recognise the very best in sport in Essex and those people who participate, support its provision and invest personally in its ongoing development. Representing Brentwood Trampoline Club were Olive Law, Lisa & Hannah McCann, Harumi & Natasha Holme and Sharon & Gemma Phillips and they were almost as delighted as Matthew to be presented with the runners-up award as 'highly recommended' in the Club of the Year category. The award ceremony took place at the exclusive Waterfront Place Restaurant in Chelmsford with more than 200 dignitaries, athletes, coaches and others involved in sports in Essex attending.
Olive Law, the club's competition secretary, was delighted on receiving the award and commented "this is a recognition of the hard work we have been putting in to make our club the best trampoline club around. To all those interested in trampolining either for competition or fun we encourage you to come and see us and try the sport out."
